Massage techniques should vary based on someone’s physiology, such as between pregnant women, athletes and the elderly. Massage training courses should include both an understanding of general anatomy and the medical issues that each of these special cases bring. These training courses may not cover every detail a spa may want, such as how to sell beauty products to clients while giving the massage or policies specific to that organization.

Massage therapists who only work on specific body part massages like foot massages don’t need licenses in most jurisdictions the way other massage therapists do. However, you need to review the subjects a massage training course covers so that you are either licensed to work in any setting at the end of the program or ready to pass the exams in your jurisdiction.

Massage therapists may work in a spa, doctor’s office, physical therapist’s office or fitness center. There are occasional fake “massage” clinics that are fronts for prostitution. This is why legitimate massage therapy jobs have strict limits on contact levels between masseuse and clients. Legitimate massage training programs teach students the laws that apply to them, whether it is limits on contact, hygiene and cleanliness standard or continuing education requirements.
